EMDR Therapy

Understanding EMDR

EMDR, or Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing, is a structured, evidence-based therapy that helps the brain process distressing or traumatic memories. Its goal is to reduce the emotional intensity of these memories so they can be recalled with greater calm and less overwhelm.

How the Process Works

In an EMDR session, you briefly focus on a difficult memory while using bilateral stimulation. This left-right stimulation may include:

  • Side-to-side eye movements

  • Alternating taps

  • Audio tones

The rhythm of bilateral stimulation supports the brain’s natural processing system. Over time, memories that feel “stuck” may become more integrated, less distressing, and easier to think about without feeling overwhelmed.

What You May Notice

With repeated sessions, the memory may begin to feel more distant, neutral, and manageable. Many people find they can recall the experience without the same level of emotional or physical intensity.

When EMDR Can Help

EMDR is commonly used to support people experiencing PTSD, anxiety, phobias, and other trauma-related difficulties. The therapy is usually delivered in eight phases, including preparation, assessment, desensitisation, and the strengthening of positive beliefs.

Why EMDR Helps

Distressing memories can remain “stuck,” carrying intense emotions, physical sensations, and negative beliefs. EMDR helps the brain process these experiences in a safer and more balanced way by helping you:

  • Reduce emotional intensity

  • See the memory from a calmer perspective

  • Release physical tension

  • Strengthen healthier beliefs (e.g., I am safe now)

Throughout the process, you remain awake, aware, and in control.

Common Reasons People Choose EMDR

  • Trauma and PTSD

  • Anxiety and panic

  • Phobias

  • Grief and loss

  • Stress and emotional overwhelm

  • Low self‑esteem

  • Difficult childhood experiences

General Information

Before EMDR begins, we will hold an assessment session to confirm that this therapy is suitable for you. I will also explain what EMDR is, how the sessions are structured, and the eight phases of the process. I only offer EMDR to adults.
